Titus 3:8 NLT
[8] This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.
Paul had given Titus the remedy for being enslaved to sin. Faith in Jesus, repentance from sins and being forgiven were parts of the process of becoming free from the grips of sin. He now tells Titus to insist on teaching the process of becoming free spiritually through faith in Jesus so people will devote themselves to doing good. Paul reminds Titus that the whole gospel will benefit anyone.
In all of Paul’s letters, he consistently points to faith in Jesus as the essential basis for the good news about forgiveness. Whether he is speaking to Hebrews or Gentiles, his message never changed from its focus on simple faith in Jesus as Messiah.
Unfortunately, there have been people who tried to alter the message of salvation by interjecting additional requirements for being born again spiritually. There have been those who cheapen Christ’s role in the redemption of mankind by adding man-made traditions or rules to the message about forgiveness. They have tried to change the message to include more than grace, mercy and faith.
Just as Titus was to teach the truth of the resurrected Christ in his day, disciples of Jesus should do the same now. The good news is simple and uncomplicated. However, there are still those who attempt to make forgiveness a matter of works and rules, rather than faith. When you have the opportunity to share the good news about Jesus with someone, focus on Jesus and Jesus alone.
