Titus 1:4 NLT
[4] I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith that we share. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace. [5] I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you.
This letter written by the apostle Paul is addressed to Titus. Titus is plainly described as Paul’s “son in the faith,” which indicates Paul had led Titus to faith in Jesus. As with many of his greetings, Paul wishes grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus the Savior be in the life of Titus, who was an early church leader and trusted companion to Paul.
Titus was a protégé of Paul’s and is mentioned in several passages in the New Testament, besides being the recipient of this letter. His presence is mentioned in Acts 15, Galatians 2, 2 Corinthians 2, 7, & 8, and 2 Timothy 4.
After Titus became a disciple, he traveled with Paul and Barnabas on their missionary journey. Later he was involved in the church in Corinth and in Crete, as well as other areas where local churches had been established. He was apparently sent by Paul to Dalmatia during Paul’s final Roman imprisonment.
Titus must have been a wise and faithful servant of Christ because of the duties he fulfilled while in Corinth and Crete. He must have also been full of the grace of God, considering the nature of the congregations he had to deal with in those two locations. He not only helped in teaching, but also was involved in the selection of church elders and in collecting love offerings for the destitute and poor.
Titus 1:5 lets us know that Titus had been given the responsibility of completing the work Paul had begun on the Island of Crete. He was also to select church leaders in the different towns they had visited where churches had been established. The next few verses give Titus some advice on what type of people should be chosen to lead the churches. We’ll take a look at those qualifications in the next video.
