Lesson 1, Part 1
Titus 1:1-3 NLT
[1] This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. [2] This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God-who does not lie-promised them before the world began. [3] And now at just the right time he has revealed this message, which we announce to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been entrusted with this work for him.
The New Testament book of Titus begins with a statement of who wrote the letter and why he is going to speak about faith in Jesus in the letter. The writer is Paul, who considers himself a slave to God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. He considers himself a slave because he is confident he has been purchased by the blood of Jesus. His position as an apostle came from his direct call by Jesus during the divine visitation while Paul was on the road to Damascus.
Paul speaks of the truth found in Jesus, who can help people live godly lives. That truth also reveals to those who follow Jesus that they will receive eternal life because of their faith in him. This truth was promised to mankind before the world began and was revealed in the life and lordship of Jesus.
The truth Paul speaks about in the beginning of his letter to Titus is the same truth that disciples of Jesus share today. It is based in the redemptive work of Jesus, who gave His life for all sinners and presented the blood sacrifice at the altar in heaven that was necessary for the sins to be forgiven. This truth rests in having faith in that redemptive work and accepting Jesus as one’s personal Savior and Lord.
Scripture plainly tells us today the same message Paul preached. Have faith in who Jesus is and what He accomplished through His death, burial and resurrection. Place your eternal future in His hands, live by His teachings and accept the gifts of forgiveness and eternal life. If you have not already done that, please ask God to forgive you right now, trust in His love for you, and you will discover the truth found in the good news about Jesus.
